Plan of Studies


General Objective

To form high level human resources capable of generating research projects and original knowledge with abilities, dexterity, attitudes and values which will permit the carrying out of research and development activities. Moreover to contribute explanations and solutions to production problems and to the Agriculture and Agrofood industry.

Specific Objectives

1.To form human resources capable of generating knowledge for sustainable agriculture production.
2. To form human resources capable of analyzing and applying solution measures socioeconomic and biological aspects of agricultural production which condition rural and agricultural development.
3. To form human resources capable of analyzing and formulating proposals and applying quality control measures of food for human and animal consumption.
4. Develop the participation in original research and the impact on the agricultural environment, as members of interdisciplinary research groups.



Necessary Academic Background


Entrance Requirements

1. Possess a Masters Degree in Agricultutal Sciences or in related areas, in the judgement of the members of the Academic Commission in Agricultural Sciences (CADCA).
2. Pass the evaluation of admission examination as specified by CADCA with a minimum average of B (or 8). This evaluation will include examinations, interviews, curriculum revision and the presentation of a pre-research project for the Doctoral Thesis.
3. The applicants who have completed three years since obtaining the title of Master, must present, in addition, a scientific article, published in the JCR Journal referred to below during this period.
4. In the exceptional case of aspirants who have only a bachelor degree in the agricultural sciences area, they must have wide experience in research authentically demonstrated by the publication of at least three scientific articles as the principal author, in journals included in the Index of Mexican Journals of Scientific and Technological Research of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) or in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) during the last three years. These aspirants must take part in and pass a complementary course without credit value (articles 81 and 82 of the Higher Studies Regulations (RES)), prior to taking part in the 9 UEA of the Doctoral Research Project. This course will be established by CADCA.
5. Present proof of studies of reading comprehension of the English language, they may produce proof approved by CADCA, they may also receive assistance from the Foreign Language workshop of UAM Xochimilco. Foreign aspirants whose native language is not Spanish, must demonstrate the domination of this language as judged by CADCA.

The Structure of the Plan of Studies

1. To form high level researchers in Agricultural Sciences capable of generating and contributing new scientific and technical knowledge in this field through the carrying out of original work, with the capacity to manage and apply adequate methodologies in the diverse areas of agricultural knowledge. As well as taking part in teaching programmes at higher education and postgraduate levels.
2. Nine trimesters (I, II, III, IV,V,VI, VII,VIII and IX).
3. 500 credits
4. Tutorials (UEA)

On completion of the sixth tutorial, the CADCA will corroborate the Student´s advances of the research project, and if necessary, authorize the registration in Tutorial 334907.



Distribution of Credits




Requirements for the Attainment of the Title of Doctor or Doctor in Agricultural Sciences


1.- Having covered a total of 360 credits corresponding to the tutorials of the Plan of Studies.
2.- Present before the CADCA proof of acceptance of an article for publication on the theme of the Thesis. The student must be the principal author and that it is to be published in a journal with arbitrage and impact factor.
3.- Once the Doctoral Thesis has been approved by the Tutorial Committee, this must be presented by the student for approval before the CADCA.
4.- Once the aforementioned requirements are met, the student must present, sustain and pass the Public dissertation of the Doctoral Thesis before the Jury assigned by the CADCA.
5.- Present proof of reading and writing comprehension of the English language approved by the Foreign Language Workshop of the Xochimilco Campus Modalities of the Thesis and Public Dissertation.
6.- The Public Dissertation must be approved by the Jury.

2 In the case where the Jury does not approve the Dissertation of the Doctoral Thesis, the candidate shall only have one other opportunity for approval.



Modalities of the Operation


The Doctorate in Agricultural Sciences has an academic organization comprised of an Evaluation Commission in Agricultural Sciences, a Tutorial Committee for each student and the Co-ordinator of studies. Each one of these entities shall have different responsibilities within the academic programme and the formation process of the students.
